Events? - Yes, there are many! - Come in February and snag a front-row seat at readings and workshops by celebrated authors at the island's very own Literary Festival. On Canada Day (July 1st) catch the North Island Jamboree, a wonderful example of "old-time" Galiano. During the BC Day long-weekend (first weekend of August ), many galleries and private homes on Galiano host a special Art Show which features new work made especially for this event. And as well, our Island’s wonderful annual  Fiesta is on that first Saturday in August, the Wine Festival is mid-August and the celebrated Blackberry Festival is always the first Saturday in October, during Canada's Thanksgiving celebrations.

Make a Movie! - Budding filmmakers flock to our Island's award-winning Gulf Islands Film & TV School, which offers one- and two-week programs to students of all ages. From June through September, everyone can enjoy free Saturday screenings of student films each week.

Blackberry Festival
Date:
October 5, 10:00 AM to October 6, 2:00 PM

Galiano Island is home to several "prickly" crops. The sweetest of these - the blackberry - grows at least two varieties. The regular Bramble type is found on main roads and on trails as is the Himalayan variety. The Himalayan variety has larger, later developing berries that are also more protected by thorns.
The Galiano Club has held a Blackberry Festival for many years. Volunteers spend the week up to the festival, held on the Saturday of the Thanksgiving weekend, making pastry for pies and the pies themselves. At the Festival one may purchase these whole pies which are fresh or frozen. Homemade soups and bread are served along with pie, ice cream, tea or coffee.

Civil Discourse - possible or not? an afternoon with Kendall Kyle
Date:
October 14,
3:00 PM to 4:30 PM

Civil discourse seems to be growing throughout the western world. Rather than explore the sides, this talk will survey current thinking about the evolution of morality and belief -the stuff that creates sides. Why do we feel before we think and often fail to recognize that that’s what we do? Why are we righteous?... tribal, sexist, racist, judgmental? And, too, why do we value civility?

This is Kendall’s 31st year on Galiano and she’s beginning to think of herself as an authentic Galianoite. She’s an explorer, but confines herself to the safety of the printed word.
